Marika Govatos |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
|
citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Marika |
|
|
Govatos, who died March 30, 2009, at the age of 96; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Marika Govatos was born June 17, 1912, in Greece; |
|
|
she was the youngest of many siblings in a large landowning |
|
|
family that had been active in the production of olives for |
|
|
nearly 200 years; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Educated at a boarding school in the provincial |
|
|
capital of Molai, she resolved at an early age to move to America, |
|
|
where she had numerous relatives; in 1938, she married John |
|
|
Govatos, the owner of the well-known Pier Cafe and co-owner of |
|
|
the Nixon Cafe; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Devoted to her family, Mrs. Govatos was dedicated |
|
|
to her work as a homemaker and was a talented gardener who earned |
|
|
more awards for her gardens than have ever been given to any other |
|
|
Corpus Christi citizen; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, An exemplary lady of strong character, Marika was |
|
|
respected in the community for her exceptional accomplishments; |
|
|
when left a widow at the age of 56, she took control as owner of |
|
|
the Wilson Building Sandwich Shop and operated it successfully |
|
|
for the next 15 years; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was an enthusiastic world traveler and was |
|
|
interested in European and American antiques and Greek cooking; |
|
|
she was a founder of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and was |
|
|
a member of its Delphi Club for over 65 years; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
|
family of Marika Govatos; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
|
memory of Marika Govatos. |
