SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 855
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Marika Govatos
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Marika
  Govatos, who died March 30, 2009, at the age of 96; and
         WHEREAS, Marika Govatos was born June 17, 1912, in Greece;
  she was the youngest of many siblings in a large landowning
  family that had been active in the production of olives for
  nearly 200 years; and
         WHEREAS, Educated at a boarding school in the provincial
  capital of Molai, she resolved at an early age to move to America,
  where she had numerous relatives; in 1938, she married John
  Govatos, the owner of the well-known Pier Cafe and co-owner of
  the Nixon Cafe; and
         WHEREAS, Devoted to her family, Mrs. Govatos was dedicated
  to her work as a homemaker and was a talented gardener who earned
  more awards for her gardens than have ever been given to any other
  Corpus Christi citizen; and
         WHEREAS, An exemplary lady of strong character, Marika was
  respected in the community for her exceptional accomplishments;
  when left a widow at the age of 56, she took control as owner of
  the Wilson Building Sandwich Shop and operated it successfully
  for the next 15 years; and
         WHEREAS, She was an enthusiastic world traveler and was
  interested in European and American antiques and Greek cooking;
  she was a founder of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and was
  a member of its Delphi Club for over 65 years; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Marika Govatos; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Marika Govatos.
