SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 862
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the American Cancer Society High Plains Division for
its efforts to establish a Hope Lodge in Lubbock; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program
provides temporary quarters free of charge for cancer patients
  and their caregivers for the duration of their cancer treatment;
with 28 Hope Lodges nationwide, the program serves tens of
thousands of patients and their families; and
WHEREAS, Hope Lodges create a homelike atmosphere for
patients who must travel substantial distances from home to
receive treatment; the lodges help to alleviate the stress and
discomfort faced by patients and their families during a very
challenging time in their lives; and
WHEREAS, Hope Lodges also help to relieve the financial
burden of cancer patients and their families, saving them
thousands of dollars in housing costs over the course of the
  average cancer treatment; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society High Plains Division
seeks to bring these benefits to the residents of the Texas
Panhandle and eastern New Mexico, many of whom must travel more
than 200 miles to receive treatment in Lubbock; it is truly
deserving of recognition for its hard work in seeking to bring
this invaluable resource to Texas; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby commend the American Cancer Society High
Plains Division on its efforts to secure a Hope Lodge for cancer
patients seeking treatment in Lubbock; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
this outstanding organization as an expression of esteem from the
  Texas Senate.
