SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 878
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Captain Chesley Sullenberger, whose bravery,
  professionalism, quick thinking, and skill saved the lives of the
  more than 150 passengers and crew aboard US Airways Flight 1549;
  and
         WHEREAS, Captain Sullenberger was piloting US Airways
  Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009, when a catastrophic bird strike
  disabled his aircraft shortly after takeoff; Captain
  Sullenberger was able to guide the plane to an emergency water
  landing in the Hudson River with only a few minor injuries to
  those on board; and
         WHEREAS, Captain Sullenberger is a 1969 graduate of
  Denison High School, where he was consistently in the top one
  percent in every academic category; he also served as president
  of the Latin Club and was first chair flute; and
         WHEREAS, Captain Sullenberger evinced an interest in
  aviation from a very young age, and he earned a pilot's license at
  the age of 14; following his graduation from high school, he
  attended the United States Air Force Academy, where he became an
  instructor pilot in the academy's cadet glider program by the end
  of his freshman year and received the outstanding Cadet in
  Airmanship Award as the top flier in his graduating class; and
         WHEREAS, He earned a master's degree from Purdue University
  and served as a fighter pilot for the air force for five years,
  advancing to become a flight leader and training officer; Captain
  Sullenberger began working for US Airlines in 1980; and
         WHEREAS, With more than 40 years of flying experience,
  Captain Sullenberger has consistently shown himself to be an
  exceptional pilot and leader; he is truly deserving of
  recognition for his professionalism and his many
  accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commend Captain Chesley Sullenberger on his
  exemplary record and extend to him best wishes for continued
  success in all his future endeavors; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
