SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 940
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Mary Immaculate Gentemann
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Sister Mary
  Immaculate Gentemann, who died April 14, 2009, at the age of 101;
  and
         WHEREAS, Sister Mary Immaculate Gentemann was born June
  12, 1907, in Fredericksburg; she became a Sister of Divine
  Providence at the age of 20 and embarked upon a long and
  productive ministerial life in the field of education; and
         WHEREAS, After holding positions as a teacher in San
  Antonio and Yoakum, Sister Mary Immaculate earned a bachelor's
  degree from Our Lady of the Lake College and a master's degree
  from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.; she went on to
  become the first full-time student from a religious congregation
  of women to attend the New York School of Social Service in New
  York City; and
         WHEREAS, In 1943 Sister Mary Immaculate returned to San
  Antonio and created the Madonna Neighborhood Center; she later
  founded the Worden School of Social Service at Our Lady of the
  Lake University and served as its first dean, a position she held
  for 10 years; and
         WHEREAS, Sister Mary Immaculate continued her ministry
  well past the age when many retire from public life, helping to
  form the Weekend College program at Our Lady of the Lake
  University in 1990; in honor of her manifest service and
  leadership, on her 100th birthday the university created the
  Sister Immaculate Gentemann Scholarship; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, intellect, and a deep abiding
  faith, Sister Mary Immaculate gave generously to others, and her
  wisdom, devotion, and commitment to her ministry will not be
  forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her life; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family and friends of Sister Mary Immaculate Gentemann; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Sister Mary Immaculate Gentemann.
