SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 944
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize the well-established sister-state relationship |
|
|
between the State of Texas and Taiwan; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The year 2009 marks the 21st anniversary of the |
|
|
sister-state relationship between Taiwan and the State of Texas; |
|
|
this affiliation was begun in June of 1988; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Frequent mutual visits by public officials from |
|
|
Texas and Taiwan over the past years have served to promote the |
|
|
exchange of ideas and strengthen the ties of friendship between |
|
|
the diverse cultures of these two states; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Numerous special sister relationships have been |
|
|
forged between the cities and counties in Taiwan and Texas; |
|
|
Taipei and Dallas have been sister cities since 1996; other |
|
|
sister-city pairs are Addison and Bian Chao, Plano and Hsin Chu, |
|
|
Grand Prairie and Gueishan, Garland and Luchu, and Carrollton and |
|
|
Yung Ho; Dallas County and Tao Yuan County are sister counties; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The State of Texas has a vital economic |
|
|
relationship with Taiwan; in 2008, Texas exported goods worth |
|
|
almost $4 million to Taiwan, making it this state's |
|
|
eighth-largest export market; the states enjoy a thriving |
|
|
commerce in components for computers and electronics and in |
|
|
petroleum and chemical products, among other items; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Sister relationships between cities, counties, |
|
|
and states are an excellent means to promote cultural and |
|
|
economic exchange and enhance relationships between nations, and |
|
|
the sister-state relationship between the State of Texas and |
|
|
Taiwan is a model of this type of beneficial exchange; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend Taiwan on its ongoing participation |
|
|
with the State of Texas in a sister-state relationship of long |
|
|
standing; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the people of Taiwan as an expression of esteem from the Texas |
|
|
Senate. |
