Scott Alan Ozmun |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Austin and Travis County in mourning the loss of the |
|
Honorable Scott Alan Ozmun, who died May 8, 2009, at the age of |
|
50; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A state district judge and longtime prominent |
|
Austin attorney, Scott Ozmun served his community and his |
|
profession with distinction, dedication, and a clear sense of |
|
justice and fairness; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Judge Ozmun was born September 30, 1958, in |
|
Cleveland, Ohio; he attended Georgetown University, where he |
|
served as student body president, and he graduated with honors |
|
from The University of Texas School of Law; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Following his graduation from law school, Judge |
|
Ozmun served as a briefing attorney for Justice William Kilgarlin |
|
of the Texas Supreme Court before joining the firm where he spent |
|
his entire private practice career of more than 20 years; he |
|
served as president of the boards of Volunteer Legal Services, |
|
the Legal Aid Society of Central Texas, and the Austin Young |
|
Lawyers Association, as well as on the boards of the Austin Bar |
|
Association and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association; at the time |
|
of his death, he was president-elect of the Austin Chapter of the |
|
American Board of Trial Advocates; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Judge Ozmun devoted his law practice to civil |
|
trial law, where he was committed to giving a voice to |
|
individuals who were taking on larger interests in the pursuit of |
|
justice; he was dedicated to winning for his clients, and he |
|
insisted that victory be pursued with honesty and integrity; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Judge Ozmun was active in local politics for many |
|
years, beginning his participation as a volunteer in a state |
|
representative race in 1984; he went on to serve two terms as |
|
chair of the Travis County Democratic Party; in 2008, he was |
|
elected to the 353rd District Court, realizing a dream he had |
|
long held; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Judge Ozmun lived much of his life under the |
|
shadow of cancer; first diagnosed at the age of 17, he |
|
nevertheless maintained a sense of equanimity and optimism in the |
|
face of uncertainty, always refusing to allow doubt to stand in |
|
the way of his goals; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, Judge |
|
Ozmun inspired all who knew him with his generosity, his warmth, |
|
and his dauntless spirit; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and his |
|
family and countless friends will long cherish the memories of |
|
his life and his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Scott Ozmun: his wife of 20 years, Beth Collum Ozmun; |
|
his daughters, Delaney Elizabeth and Kendall Lynne Ozmun; his |
|
parents, Bob and Peggy Ozmun; and his brother, Randy Ozmun; and, |
|
be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of the Honorable Scott Alan Ozmun. |
