SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 972

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Christopher M. Sellers, a patrol officer with the Houston Police Department, who is the recipient of the 2008 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education; and

WHEREAS, A peace officer with 13 years of experience, Christopher Sellers conducted welfare checks in Houston apartment complexes following Hurricane Ike; on September 17, 2008, while conferring with an apartment complex manager, he heard a child scream for help; and

WHEREAS, He ran toward the sound in an alleyway and saw a man with a raised sawed-off shotgun take hold of a young boy; Officer Sellers tried to remove the boy but was unable to do so; when the man refused to drop his weapon, Officer Sellers was forced to open fire, rescuing the boy; and

WHEREAS, Officer Sellers demonstrated his proficient skills as a police officer while facing a dangerous situation; his exceptional courage and swift action saved the life of a child and made a neighborhood safer; he is truly an inspiration to all who know him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend Houston Patrol Officer Christopher M. Sellers for his valiant service to his community and congratulate him on receiving the 2008 Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Officer Sellers as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
