SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 988
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
recognize Jean Agnes Smith and the late William Dale "Bill" |
|
Matthews for their many achievements and their dedication to the |
|
Corpus Christi community; and |
|
WHEREAS, Jean Smith and Bill Matthews devoted years of |
|
their lives to serving the people of their adopted hometown of |
|
Corpus Christi; both born in Moline, Illinois, they both attended |
|
Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where Bill studied |
|
economics and Jean studied psychology and education; and |
|
WHEREAS, During her college years, Jean was voted one of |
|
the "50 Most Beautiful College Girls of 1941" and was featured in |
|
Look magazine; they were married in 1942 in Corpus Christi, where |
|
Bill was stationed with the United States Navy, and they enjoyed |
|
66 years of shared happiness and love; and |
|
WHEREAS, Jean taught for 20 years at Woodlawn Elementary |
|
School and Tom Brown Junior High School, and she is blessed with |
|
great talent in calligraphy, knitting, sewing, and embroidery; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Bill Matthews served the nation for many years as |
|
a member of the United States Navy, including service in World |
|
War II; he logged 8,000 hours of flight during his 20 years of |
|
service and retired in 1962 with the rank of lieutenant |
|
commander; and |
|
WHEREAS, Jean Smith and Bill Matthews were active in |
|
numerous civic and church activities, and together they maintained |
|
the rose garden at First Presbyterian Church for 12 years; they |
|
loved sailing in the bay, where Bill would entertain guests with |
|
his favorite poem, Lasca; and |
|
WHEREAS, Exemplary citizens and an inspiration to all, |
|
Jean Smith and Bill Matthews have enriched the Corpus Christi |
|
community with their engaging love of the region, their volunteer |
|
activities, and their enthusiasm for living life to the fullest; |
|
they are truly deserving of recognition for their devotion and |
|
their many contributions to their community; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
Legislature, hereby commend and honor Jean Agnes Smith and |
|
William Dale "Bill" Matthews on their dedication to their |
|
community; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|
their honor as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
