SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1018
         WHEREAS, The Texas Forestry Association is convening a
  Forest Summit in Nacogdoches on October 21, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, This meeting will provide a valuable opportunity
  for elected officials, community leaders, forestland owners, and
  industry professionals to address issues concerning the future
  of the forest resources and forest industry in East Texas; and
         WHEREAS, The forest industry has played a vital role in the
  economic life of Texas since the latter decades of the 19th
  century; today, this industry demonstrates its commitment to
  sound forest management and conservation principles by
  replanting more than 100 million trees annually; in addition,
  timber companies manage their lands so as to provide wildlife
  habitat and recreational opportunities, and they lead the way in
  recycling efforts; and
         WHEREAS, In the coming years, the worldwide demand for wood
  and paper products is projected to increase, as is the need for
  biomass as a source of energy and transportation fuel; and
         WHEREAS, The Texas Forestry Association recognizes that
  good stewardship programs, such as the Sustainable Forestry
  Initiative and the American Tree Farm System, must be maintained
  in order to establish new markets for wood and paper products and
  to provide a secure, productive future for the East Texas forest
  industry; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, the Texas Forestry Association
  has played an instrumental role in fostering the health of Texas
  forests and the vigor of the multifaceted industry that they
  support, and this organization is to be commended for its dynamic
  leadership in this critical arena; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commemorate the convening of the 2009 Forest
  Summit by the Texas Forestry Association and extend to all those
  involved in this conference sincere best wishes for a productive
  forum; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared for the Texas Forestry Association as an expression of
  high regard from the Texas Senate.
