SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1068
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Herbert Richard Custer
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Katy in mourning the loss of Herbert Richard Custer,
  who died May 20, 2009, at the age of 83; and
 
         WHEREAS, Herb Custer was born November 25, 1925, in San
  Diego, California; he served the nation with honor and
  distinction during World War II aboard the submarine USS
  Silversides; and
 
         WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Custer returned to California
  and earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola University; he met and
  married his wife, Pat, and the couple started a family as he began
  a career in the oil business; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Custer enjoyed a long and productive career,
  working for Atlantic Richfield before joining the Shell Oil
  Company, where he worked in human resources until his retirement
  in the early 1980s; and
 
         WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Mr. Custer embarked on
  a new career as a teacher; he began graduate studies working
  toward a master of business administration degree and taught
  classes at the University of Houston and Houston Community
  College; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Custer remained loyal to his comrades in the
  submarine service as a lifelong member of the United States
  Submarine Society; proud of his Irish lineage, he was a founding
  member of the Irish American Heritage Association and was an avid
  follower of Notre Dame football; and
 
         WHEREAS, A man of humility, strength, and compassion, he
  gave generously to others; he was a devout man who practiced his
  faith in his daily life, and his sense of duty and enthusiasm for
  living each day to the fullest were an inspiration to all who knew
  him; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Custer was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and his family and friends will continue to live
  with the cherished memories of his life and his many
  achievements; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Herbert Richard Custer: his loving wife of 58 years,
  Pat; his children, Ellen, Cathy, Diane, Kevin, Tim, Daniel,
  Thomas, and Joseph; his brother, Joseph; and his six
  grandchildren; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Herbert Richard Custer.
