SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1088

George Edwards |
| |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
|
citizens of Prairie View in mourning the loss of George Edwards, |
|
|
who died May 28, 2009, at the age of 60; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, George Edwards |
|
|
was widely admired across the nation for his direction of the |
|
|
acclaimed Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards joined the faculty at Prairie View A&M |
|
|
University in 1978; under his leadership, the Marching Storm Band |
|
|
came to be considered one of the most dynamic bands in the world |
|
|
for its unmatched musicianship and its stirring drum line; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The band had numerous memorable performances |
|
|
under the direction of Mr. Edwards, including marching in |
|
|
President George W. Bush's Presidential Inaugural Parade and the |
|
|
2009 Tournament of Roses Association Rose Parade in Pasadena, |
|
|
California; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to nurturing the musical talent of |
|
|
countless student performers over the course of more than 30 |
|
|
years, Mr. Edwards acted as a mentor and father figure; known |
|
|
affectionately on campus as "Prof Edwards," he used music to |
|
|
develop lasting relationships with his students; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A man of strength, discipline, and compassion, he |
|
|
gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, dedication, and wise |
|
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He was beloved by students and colleagues alike, |
|
|
and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit and his |
|
|
many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
|
family and friends of George Edwards; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
|
memory of George Edwards. |
