SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1095
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Leonard E. Hoffman, Jr.
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Dallas in mourning the loss of the Honorable Leonard
  E. Hoffman, Jr., who died May 22, 2009, at the age of 89; and
         WHEREAS, Leonard Hoffman was born in Little Rock,
  Arkansas, and moved with his family to Tyler, where he graduated
  from high school; he attended Tyler Junior College and studied
  law at The University of Texas in Austin before serving his
  country during World War II for almost four years in the United
  States Army; and
         WHEREAS, After his military service, Leonard Hoffman
  returned to The University of Texas at Austin and earned his law
  degree in 1947; he was in private practice for 22 years in Dallas
  before being elected judge of the 160th District Court, where he
  served from 1971 through 1987; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Hoffman was dedicated to his work in the legal
  profession; he had a rewarding 55-year career as a lawyer, a
  judge, an arbitrator, and a mediator, but he was most proud of his
  role in integrating the Dallas Bar Association in 1963;
  professional honors he received include the Justice Emeritus
  award from the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts; and
         WHEREAS, He was a Mason, a member of the Oak Cliff Lions
  Club, a leader of the Circle 10 Council of the Boy Scouts of
  America, an officer and director of the Mental Health Association
  of Dallas County, and head of the local chapter of the Society of
  Mayflower Descendants; he was a founder of and an active leader
  in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd; and
         WHEREAS, A kind and highly esteemed gentleman, Leonard
  Hoffman, Jr., was renowned for his candor and sincerity and
  regarded by his colleagues as the ultimate lawyer; and
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
  forever by his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of the Honorable Leonard E. Hoffman, Jr.: his wife, Clara
  Graeber Hoffman; his sons, Leonard Hoffman III and Paul Hoffman;
  his daughters, Gretchen Vohsing and Sally Hurd; and his nine
  grandchildren; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of the Honorable Leonard E. Hoffman, Jr.
