The bill would amend the Business and Commerce Code to prohibit printing a person's driver's license number on a sales receipt. A violation would be a civil penalty not to exceed $500 for each calendar month in which the violation occurs. The attorney general or the prosecuting attorney in the county in which the violation occurs may bring an action to recover the civil penalty imposed.
The bill would take effect January 1, 2010.
According to the Office of the Attorney General, costs associated with implementing provisions of the bill could be absorbed within existing resources.
