TO: | Honorable Royce West, Chair, Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations |
FROM: | John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board |
IN RE: | HB1177 by Guillen (Relating to the eligibility of certain peace officers and firefighters for legislative leave.), As Engrossed |
The bill would entitle a fire fighter or a peace officer employed by a municipality with a population of 50,000 or more or a county with a population of 190,000 or more to request legislative leave to serve in, appear before, or petition a governmental body during a regular or special session of the body.
Current statute applies to a municipality with a population of 200,000 or more or to a county with a population of 500,000 or more. The proposed change would increase the number of municipalities and counties to which the statute would apply.
