TO: | Honorable Tommy Merritt, Chair, House Committee on Public Safety |
FROM: | John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board |
IN RE: | SB388 by Carona (Relating to the creation of a public corruption unit in the Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas.), As Engrossed |
The bill would amend Government Code, Chapter 411 to create a public corruption unit within the Department of Public Safety (DPS) which must be established no later than December 1, 2010. This bill takes effect immediately if two-thirds of the members in both the House of Representatives and the Senate vote to approve this bill. If not, the bill takes effect on September 1, 2009.
DPS states they are unable to determine the quantity of requests for assistance for the newly created unit. Consequently, DPS states the number of personnel needed to staff the unit and the subsequent fiscal impact cannot be determined. This analysis assumes the bill, in its current form, will not create a significant fiscal impact to DPS.
