The bill would require school districts in which 50 percent or more of the students are eligible to participate in the federal free or reduced-priced lunch program to provide a summer nutrition program unless the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) grants a waiver.
The bill would require TDA to notify each field office and qualifying school district of its requirement to provide a summer nutrition program during the next summer recess.
The bill would require TDA and TEA to joint develop a plan for increasing access to summer nutrition programs.
No significant impact to the state is anticipated.
