LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 81ST LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 6, 2009

TO:
Honorable Jane Nelson, Chair, Senate Committee on Health & Human Services

FROM:
John S. O'Brien, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1214 by Deuell (Relating to consumption advisories for mercury contamination in fish, crustaceans, molluscan shellfish, and other aquatic and terrestrial animals.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would require the Department of State Health Services to post consumption advisory signs for mercury contaminated fish, crustaceans, molluscan shellfish and other aquatic and terrestrial animals around certain bodies of water. DSHS currently posts advisory signs if mercury if found above 0.7 mg/kg.  The bill would lower it to 0.3 mg/kg.  It is assumed that any cost associated with posting the new signs can be absorbed within existing resources.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
