R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Mamiliano Juan Rodriguez devoted much of his |
|
life to serving his community, and Starr County was made a better |
|
place because of his actions and the example he set; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Reynosa, Mexico, Mamiliano Rodriguez was |
|
born on May 6, 1905; he came to Texas with his family during the |
|
Mexican Revolution and grew up in Hidalgo; after graduating from |
|
high school, he attended Tulane University and the University of |
|
Alabama, and he went on to earn his medical degree from the |
|
University of Oklahoma; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rodriguez completed his internship and settled |
|
in Rio Grande City in 1934, becoming the town surgeon; he later |
|
served his country as a member of the U.S. Medical Corps during |
|
World War II, earning the rank of colonel and overseeing an air |
|
evacuation hospital service unit; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his notable medical career, Dr. Rodriguez |
|
delivered more than 4,000 babies; along with his wife, Rebecca, who |
|
became a registered nurse, he helped to establish the Rodriguez |
|
Hospital in Rio Grande City, and he was known to never turn away a |
|
patient; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Rodriguez further served as Starr County judge |
|
for 22 years; he was a founding member of the Starr County New Party |
|
and a valued contributor to the South Texas Democratic Party; a 32nd |
|
degree Mason, he was also interested in soil conservation and took |
|
an active role in his ranching and farming business; and |
|
WHEREAS, Known as a man who demonstrated "malice towards none |
|
and charity to all," Dr. Rodriguez was a highly respected community |
|
leader; although he passed away on July 13, 1968, his life remains |
|
an inspiring example of the good that one person can accomplish, and |
|
his contributions live on in his legacy of service and achievement; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Dr. Mamiliano Juan Rodriguez and honor his work in behalf of the |
|
people of Starr County. |
