R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Tejano music community lost one of its pillars |
|
with the death of groundbreaking DJ Javier Villanueva of San Diego |
|
on June 10, 2011, at the age of 61; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Alice on June 10, 1950, "J. V." Villanueva |
|
was the son of Antonio and Ernestina Villanueva; he hosted a morning |
|
show on KUKA 105.9-FM from the early days of Tejano radio and |
|
introduced his fans to many artists who went on to become stars; in |
|
addition, the popular broadcast personality served as a manager for |
|
such artists as Laura Canales, Los Fabulosos Cuatro, and Carlos |
|
Guzman; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Villanueva earned the nickname "the Dean of |
|
Tejano" through his dedication to the music; he worked diligently |
|
to promote gifted artists who fostered the development of the |
|
genre, whether they were already established or just getting their |
|
start, and he won official state recognition for Alice as the |
|
birthplace of Tejano; in 1999, he helped found the Tejano Roots Hall |
|
of Fame Museum, and he served as its chief executive officer; the |
|
mayor of Alice proclaimed September 18 as Javier "J. V." Villanueva |
|
Day in 2004, and the following year, Tejano Magazine named him |
|
Tejano Music Person of the Year; and |
|
WHEREAS, J. V. Villanueva brought Tejano music and joy into |
|
the lives of innumerable people, and although he will be deeply |
|
missed by his loved ones, his contributions will continue to |
|
resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Javier "J. V." Villanueva and extend sincere sympathy to the |
|
members of his family: to his wife, Mary Ester Villanueva; to his |
|
sons, Javier Antoine Villanueva and his wife, Merlinda, Jose A. |
|
Rodriguez and his wife, Jenny, and Johnny Rodriguez and his wife, |
|
Mandy; to his daughter, Eva Garcia, and her husband, Pete; to his |
|
grandfather, Raul Hernandez; to his brothers, Antonio G. |
|
Villanueva, Jr., and his wife, Rosie, and Tony "Buddy" Villanueva; |
|
to his sister, Gloria "Puggy" Scoyola; to his brothers-in-law, |
|
Robert Garcia and his wife, Elia, Roel Garcia and his wife, Diana, |
|
Raul Garcia and his wife, Vicky, and Jose Garcia; to his |
|
sisters-in-law, Thelma Villarreal and her husband, Ranulfo, and |
|
Cynthia Garcia; to his grandchildren, Erika Rae Garcia, Brittany N. |
|
Gibson and her husband, Cody, Kimberly Ann Burgess and her husband, |
|
Tanner, Ashley D. Garcia, Natasha N. Rodriguez, Daniel J. |
|
Rodriguez, Jon Anthony Rodriguez, Leandra J. Rodriguez, Joshua A. |
|
Rodriguez, and Kyra S. Rangel; to his great-grandson, Ayden Madison |
|
Burgess; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it |

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Javier |
|
"J. V." Villanueva. |
