R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Edna and Arnoldo Cantu have distinguished
  themselves through their service to the residents of Freer and
  Duval County; and
         WHEREAS, The daughter of Adolfo Vela and Eudelia Vela, Edna
  Cantu has worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years and has
  been the postmaster of Freer for the past 21 years; in addition, she
  was elected to the board of trustees of the Freer Independent School
  District in 1988 and served for 22 years, including eight years as
  president; during her tenure, a $23 million bond was passed to allow
  the completion of major renovations to schools and the construction
  of a new administration building; and
         WHEREAS, Arnoldo Cantu is the son of Eleodoro Cantu and
  Odilia Gonzales; he was a deputy with the Duval County Sheriff's
  Office for many years, and since 1987 he has made his living as a
  self-employed businessman; he owns the Cantu Tire Center in Freer
  as well as Venado Homes, Venado Storage, a car dealership, and two
  car washes in Duval County; he has also made his mark as an elected
  official, serving on the Freer City Council for two decades and as
  an alderman for six years before being elected mayor in 1997; he
  spent 14 years in that post, never missing a meeting, and his
  accomplishments included helping to secure several million dollars
  in grants for the city and overseeing significant improvements to
  the local fairgrounds; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Cantu celebrated their 30th wedding
  anniversary on April 27, 2011, and through the years they have had
  the pleasure of seeing their family grow to include three children,
  Shelly, Jacob, and Jaime, as well as two grandchildren, Enrique and
  Alyssa; and
         WHEREAS, This inspiring couple are active supporters of the
  Freer High School Buckaroos and also sponsor numerous Little League
  teams, help fund student scholarships, and support the Freer Fair
  Association; they are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and
  Mrs. Cantu is also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the
  Americas; and
         WHEREAS, True champions of Freer, Edna and Arnoldo Cantu have
  made a positive difference in the lives of their fellow citizens in
  countless ways, and they are highly regarded for their civic
  engagement; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Edna and Arnoldo
  Cantu for their contributions to their community and extend to them
  sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Cantu as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
