R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The city of Richardson lost an admired civic leader |
|
and volunteer in 2011 with the death of Dorothy Edna Schulte |
|
McCalpin at the age of 86; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on December 20, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, |
|
to William Bernard Schulte and Edna M. McBride, Dot Schulte |
|
attended Webster College in St. Louis while her sweetheart, George |
|
Ambrose McCalpin, was serving his country in the United States |
|
military during World War II; she earned a bachelor's degree in |
|
English in 1947, and the couple were married the following year; |
|
they then settled in Beaumont, where the couple's six children, |
|
Peggy, Tricia, Jim, Bill, John, and Michael, were born; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1965, Mr. McCalpin, a geophysicist, was |
|
transferred to Richardson, and the family relocated to the city |
|
Mrs. McCalpin would call home for more than 45 years; she devoted |
|
herself to her family, serving as a Girl Scout leader, a den mother, |
|
and a PTA president, and she learned speech therapy in order to help |
|
one of her children overcome a speech defect; moreover, she taught |
|
hundreds of Richardson children swimming and lifesaving skills at |
|
public pools; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. McCalpin later began taking photography |
|
courses, and with the encouragement of her husband she pursued a |
|
career in that field; a member of the Professional Photographers of |
|
America for more than 20 years, she served as president of both the |
|
Dallas and Texas chapters of the organization; she worked as a |
|
wedding and portrait photographer and also took many pictures of |
|
local leaders in Richardson; and |
|
WHEREAS, A tireless champion of her community, Mrs. McCalpin |
|
served more than a decade on the Richardson parks and recreation and |
|
zoning boards, and she was instrumental in the success of the city's |
|
Wildflower Arts and Music Festival and Great Fountain Festival and |
|
the construction of the fountain and the brick memorial walk at City |
|
Hall; she held leadership roles in nearly every civic and community |
|
club in Richardson with female members, including local chapters of |
|
the Junior League, Rotary International, and YMCA, as well as the |
|
Altrusa International volunteer association; her long list of civic |
|
responsibilities further included service as a board member of the |
|
Network of Community Ministries and the Richardson Adult Literacy |
|
Center, as president of the Friends of the Richardson Public |
|
Library, and as a founding member of St. Mark the Evangelist |
|
Catholic Church in Plano, and she also assisted numerous other |
|
organizations and initiatives; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. McCalpin was deservedly named Citizen of the |
|
Year by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce in 1990, and the city |
|
proclaimed her 80th birthday "Dot McCalpin Day" in 2004; in |
|
addition, the Friends of the Richardson Public Library have created |
|
a scholarship in her honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, This spirited Texan gave generously of herself |
|
throughout her life, and although she will be deeply missed, she |
|
will forever be remembered with great affection by those who were |
|
privileged to share in her love and friendship; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|
of Dorothy Edna Schulte McCalpin and extend sincere sympathy to the |
|
members of her family: to her husband, George; to her daughters, |
|
Peggy Clark and her husband, Joe, and Tricia Stefanko and her |
|
husband, Ed; to her sons, Jim McCalpin, Bill McCalpin and his wife, |
|
Chris, John McCalpin, and Michael McCalpin and his wife, Julie; to |
|
her grandchildren, Erin, Kevin, Allison, Nicholas, Amy, Alex, |
|
Matthew, Kenneth, Reid, and Eleanor; and to her other relatives and |
|
many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dot |
|
McCalpin. |
