Ramsay Gillman |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of noted businessman and |
|
philanthropist Ramsay Gillman, who died June 3, 2011, at the age |
|
of 67; and |
|
WHEREAS, A sixth-generation Texan, Ramsay Gillman was born |
|
February 1, 1944, in Houston; he began his long and distinguished |
|
career in the automobile industry working in the parts department |
|
of his father's Pontiac dealership; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Gillman became an authorized dealer in 1967 |
|
after attending the General Motors Dealer Management Institute |
|
and other specialized schools; he went on to create the Gillman |
|
Companies, one of the largest privately held automobile |
|
dealership groups in the country; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Gillman played an |
|
important leadership role in the automobile industry, serving |
|
for a decade as a director of the National Automobile Dealers |
|
Association, including a term as its president; he also served as |
|
president of the Houston Automobile Dealers Association and as |
|
vice president of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Gillman won numerous awards over the course of |
|
his career, including the lifetime achievement Automotive |
|
Legends Award from the Texas Automobile Dealers Association; he |
|
was appointed by Governor Mark White to serve as vice chairman of |
|
the Texas Motor Vehicle Commission and by Governor Rick Perry to |
|
serve on the board of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles; and |
|
WHEREAS, Among the many charitable and philanthropic |
|
causes to which he generously donated his time and resources were |
|
the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Youth Scholarship Program, |
|
the Fort Bend County Women's Center, the Earning by Learning |
|
Program, the Ronald McDonald House, the Muscular Dystrophy |
|
Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Sickle Cell |
|
Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he |
|
will be long remembered for his warm and loyal friendship, his |
|
love of the outdoors, his exceptional storytelling abilities, |
|
and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
|
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
|
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Ramsay Gillman: his |
|
beloved wife of 35 years, Stevie Gillman; his daughter and |
|
son-in-law, Stacey and Frank Wimbish; his sons and |
|
daughter-in-law Jason and Brittany Gillman and Christopher |
|
Gillman; and his grandchildren; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Ramsay Gillman. |
