SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 128
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize San Jacinto College as it celebrates the 50th
  anniversary of its founding; and
 
         WHEREAS, The doors of San Jacinto College officially
  opened at 8:30 a.m. on September 18, 1961, and by the end of the
  week enrollment had reached 876; San Jacinto College had set a
  new record for first-year enrollment for Texas junior colleges,
  and the total was the second-largest first-year enrollment for
  all Texas colleges; and
 
         WHEREAS, San Jacinto College rapidly became an educational
  leader in the greater Houston area, with a solid reputation of
  providing affordable, high-quality teaching and training in
  science, math, language, fine arts, and technical programs; and
 
         WHEREAS, On April 6, 1963, San Jacinto College was awarded
  full accreditation by the Texas Association of Colleges and
  Universities, making it the first college to become a fully
  accredited member after only two years of operation; and
 
         WHEREAS, In the fall of 1966, San Jacinto College was
  accepted as a full member of the Southern Association of Colleges
  and Schools, one of only two colleges to be granted full
  membership after only five years of operation; and
 
         WHEREAS, San Jacinto College now operates three campuses,
  nine extension centers, and an early college high school, serving
  nearly 30,000 students in more than 140 degree and certificate
  options, including university transfer and job training
  programs; and
 
         WHEREAS, San Jacinto College is preparing for future
  growth and expansion with facility upgrades at all three campuses
  that will enhance instruction in science, mathematics, allied
  health, and technology; and
 
         WHEREAS, For 50 years, San Jacinto College has maintained a
  consistent tradition of excellence by providing outstanding,
  cost-effective education to the citizens of eastern Harris
  County; the 50th anniversary of the college is being celebrated
  during the 2011-2012 academic year with a variety of events and
  activities; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
  Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby applaud and congratulate
  San Jacinto College on 50 outstanding years of service to the
  community and proclaim September 19, 2011, as San Jacinto College
  Day; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the college as a memento of this special occasion.
