Ramiro Raul Casso |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of legendary South Texas physician, |
|
educator, and civil rights leader Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso, who died |
|
June 23, 2011, at the age of 88; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ramiro R. Casso was born in Laredo on August 4, 1922; |
|
he earned an engineering degree from Texas A&M University in 1943 |
|
and served overseas during World War II; after returning to |
|
Laredo, he worked as an engineer for two years; and |
|
WHEREAS, He then earned a medical degree and moved with his |
|
family to McAllen; he had a private practice in family medicine |
|
for 37 years and devoted much time to treating the indigent and |
|
uninsured, opening a charity medical clinic for farmworkers and |
|
helping to found the Hidalgo County Health Care Corporation; and |
|
WHEREAS, After retiring from private practice in 1994, he |
|
continued working for civil rights and better access to health |
|
care at the local, state, and national levels; he helped found |
|
the nursing program at South Texas College and was instrumental |
|
in the establishment of its Nursing and Allied Health Center, |
|
which was subsequently named after him; and |
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted and caring husband, father, and |
|
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will long be |
|
treasured by his family, his many friends, and all those who had |
|
the good fortune of knowing him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life |
|
of Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso and extend sincere condolences to his |
|
bereaved family; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
|
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of |
|
Dr. Ramiro Raul Casso. |
