Committee Report (Unamended)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

History is made up of significant events that shape our future and outstanding leaders who influence our destiny.  Veterans hold a place of honor in the history of the United States, for it is due to their courage and sacrifice that today our nation is free and prosperous.  The contributions of U.S. veterans to our nation's history place them in an inimitable position.  It is fitting that we recognize the great sacrifices they have made to ensure that the name and symbol of America burn bright around the world.  H.B. 1409 designates a portion of highway as the Veterans Memorial Parkway to recognize all the brave men and women who have served our great country and to honor the memory of those who have died on its behalf.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

H.B. 1409 amends the Transportation Code to designate State Highway 243 in Van Zandt County between State Highway 198 and State Highway 64 as the Veterans Memorial Parkway.  The bill requires the Texas Department of Transportation, subject to the availability of funds, to design and construct memorial markers indicating the highway number, the designation as the Veterans Memorial Parkway, and any other appropriate information and to erect a marker at each end of the parkway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the parkway.
