AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

 

S.B. 58 renames segments of State Highways 359, 16, and 285 as the Veterans of the Korean War Memorial Highway.  The costs associated with the creation and placement of the signs will be covered by the veterans group and other charitable groups in Webb County that requested the renaming of the highway.

 

As proposed, S.B. 58 amends current law relating to the designation of segments of State Highways 359, 16, and 285 as the Veterans of the Korean War Memorial Highway.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1.  Amends Subchapter B, Chapter 225, Transportation Code, by adding Section 225.0341, as follows:

 

Sec. 225.0341.  VETERANS OF THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.  (a)  Provides that the following highways are collectively designated as the Veterans of the Korean War Memorial Highway:

 

(1) State Highway 359, between U.S. Highway 83 and State Highway 16;

 

(2) State Highway 16 between State Highway 359 and State Highway 285; and

 

(3) State Highway 285 between State Highway 16 and the eastern boundary of the city of Falfurrias.

 

(b) Requires the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), subject to Section 225.021(c) (relating to TxDOT's responsibility to design, construct, or erect a marker) to design and construct memorial markers indicating the highway number, the designation as the Veterans of the Korean War Memorial Highway, and any other appropriate information, and to erect a marker at each end of the highway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the highway.

 

SECTION 2.  Effective date: September 1, 2011.
