AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

Chapter 448 (Texas Emancipation Juneteenth Cultural and Historical Commission), Government Code, provides for the establishment of a Juneteenth memorial monument on the grounds of the State Capitol, and the State Preservation Board approved the location of the monument at its meeting held on February 14, 2003.

Rather than limiting the focus of the monument to the commemoration of Juneteenth, the legislature supports the establishment of a monument to celebrate the contributions of African American Texans to the history of this state at the location previously approved for a Juneteenth monument.

RESOLVED

That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas hereby express support for the establishment of a monument to African American Texans on the grounds of the State Capitol at the location approved for a Juneteenth monument by the State Preservation Board in 2003.

That the secretary of state forward an official copy of this resolution to the executive director and members of the State Preservation Board.
