A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the essential knowledge and skills of the social |
|
|
studies curriculum used in the public schools. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by |
|
|
adding Subsection (s) to read as follows: |
|
|
(s) The essential knowledge and skills for social studies, |
|
|
as modified and adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010, |
|
|
have no effect. The board may not issue a request for production of |
|
|
textbooks reflecting those essential knowledge and skills or |
|
|
require school districts to provide instruction based on those |
|
|
essential knowledge and skills. As soon as possible after |
|
|
September 1, 2011, the board shall initiate a new review of the |
|
|
essential knowledge and skills for social studies. Pending |
|
|
completion of that new review, school districts shall provide |
|
|
instruction in social studies on the basis of the essential |
|
|
knowledge and skills in effect during the 2010-2011 school year. |
|
|
This subsection expires September 1, 2013. |

SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
