A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to the term of probationary contracts for certain public
  school teachers.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 21.102(b), Education Code, is amended to
  read as follows:
         (b)  A probationary contract may not be for a term exceeding
  one school year. The probationary contract may be renewed for two
  additional one-year periods, for a maximum permissible
  probationary contract period of three school years, except that the
  probationary period may not exceed two years [one year] for a person
  who has been employed as a teacher in public education for at least
  five of the eight years preceding employment by the district.
         SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
