R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The First United Methodist Church of Buna has |
|
received an official Texas State Historical Marker in recognition |
|
of its long and notable history; and |
|
WHEREAS, In January 1904, Tex Rogers and James, John, Ethel, |
|
and Minnie Hancock came together to establish a Methodist church; |
|
services were held in the town's schoolhouse until 1922, when the |
|
congregation dedicated the building and community hall it continues |
|
to occupy to this day; through the years, a number of additions have |
|
been made to the structure to meet the growing needs of its members; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The house of worship has provided area residents |
|
with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and |
|
community outreach, supporting such worthwhile programs as the |
|
Epworth League, United Methodist Women and Men, and Methodist Youth |
|
Fellowship; and |
|
WHEREAS, The First United Methodist Church has played a |
|
significant role in Buna, and recognition by the Texas Historical |
|
Commission is a tribute to the unwavering commitment of its |
|
congregants, both past and present, to their church and their |
|
community; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of a Texas State |
|
Historical Marker for the First United Methodist Church of Buna and |
|
extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
