R E S O L U T I O N
         
  WHEREAS, There are few greater indications of civic pride
 
  than an attractive and well-maintained environment, and Katy is one
 
  of 10 Texas cities that have been recognized for their efforts in
 
  this regard with a 2010 Governor's Community Achievement Award; and
         
         WHEREAS, For more than 20 years, Keep Texas Beautiful and the
 
  Texas Department of Transportation have collaborated to honor those
 
  Texas towns that go above and beyond in their work to improve their
 
  outdoor spaces; honorees are chosen based on achievements in
 
  community leadership and coordination, public awareness,
 
  education, beautification and property improvement, litter
 
  prevention and cleanup, solid waste management, and illegal dumping
 
  and litter laws, and receipt of the award includes funding for
 
  landscaping projects along local state rights-of-way; and
         
         WHEREAS, Keep Katy Beautiful has worked hard to protect and
 
  beautify the city; along with the Harris County Municipal Utility
 
  District, the organization has hosted hazardous waste collection
 
  events, and KKB was also the driving force behind a local dumpster
 
  ordinance that improved the sites of nearly 160 waste containers;
 
  and
         
         WHEREAS, Partnering with the Katy Parks Department, Keep Katy
 
  Beautiful transformed a blighted, forgotten area of the city into
 
  the Katy Play Station, a playscape constructed entirely from
 
  recycled materials; the innovative installation contains
 
  facilities that cater to children with hearing and sight
 
  restrictions, autism, and other disabilities; in addition, KKB
 
  oversees 11 Adopt-a-Spot locations throughout the community; and
         
         WHEREAS, The City of Katy has maintained excellent
 
  environmental programs while balancing the needs of its
 
  ever-increasing population, and the success of these initiatives is
 
  improving the quality of life in the area and setting a noteworthy
 
  example for other communities across the state; now, therefore, be
 
  it
         
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 
  Legislature hereby honor the City of Katy for its receipt of a 2010
 
  Governor's Community Achievement Award and commend all those
 
  involved in Katy's beautification for a job well done; and, be it
 
  further
         
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 
  prepared for the City of Katy as an expression of high regard by the
 
  Texas House of Representatives.
