R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Bill Monroe Tullos of Arden has been chosen as the |
|
2010 recipient of the National Golden Spur Award; and |
|
WHEREAS, This prestigious honor recognizes the lifetime |
|
achievements of the individual selected as the top rancher in the |
|
United States as judged by a group of respected organizations that |
|
includes the American Quarter Horse Association, the National |
|
Cattlemen's Foundation, the Ranching Heritage Association, the |
|
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the Texas Cattle |
|
Feeders Association, and the Texas Farm Bureau; the only national |
|
distinction of its kind, the Golden Spur Award acknowledges the |
|
humanistic and scientific contributions made by the honoree to the |
|
livestock and ranching industries; and |
|
WHEREAS, Bill Tullos earned the commendation as a result of |
|
his enduring efforts to bring his ranchland back to its natural |
|
state; by removing the cedar and mesquite trees that consume |
|
valuable water and by allowing the natural grasses to return to |
|
prominence, he has made the land more conducive to grazing; he began |
|
the conservation program in 1959, when the combination of a drought |
|
and the spread of the trees caused his creeks to run dry; his work |
|
has helped bring about a revitalization of Little Rocky Creek and |
|
the Middle Concho River, both of which traverse his property; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Tullos has been director of the Middle Concho |
|
Soil and Water Conservation District since 1955 and more recently |
|
has assisted the Upper Colorado River Authority with its |
|
participation in the Clean Rivers Program; he has been a Texas Farm |
|
Bureau vice president and state director and is a member of the |
|
Texas Beef Council, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, and |
|
the Sheep & Goat Predator Management Board; moreover, he has been |
|
named an honorary director for life by the Texas Sheep & Goat |
|
Raisers' Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, With the exception of the four years he spent as a |
|
pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, Mr. Tullos has |
|
always lived on his ranch, which is the home of the Bar-T brand; in |
|
all his endeavors, he has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, |
|
Margie, his son, George William Tullos and his wife, Teri, his |
|
daughter, Carolyn Olivia Tullos McGehee and her husband, Gary, and |
|
his five grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, The dedication and passion Bill Tullos has brought |
|
to his pursuits have helped return a portion of the Texas landscape |
|
back to its natural condition, and that accomplishment has made him |
|
a positive role model for other ranchers who seek to preserve the |
|
beauty and productivity of the Lone Star State's open spaces; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Bill Monroe Tullos on being chosen |
|
as the recipient of the 2010 National Golden Spur Award and extend |
|
to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Tullos as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
