R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center in
  the Houston Independent School District is receiving an official
  Texas Historical Marker on February 12, 2011, from the Texas
  Historical Commission; and
         WHEREAS, The oldest high school in Harris County and one of
  the very oldest in all of Texas, Sam Houston Math, Science, and
  Technology Center was founded in 1878 as Houston Academy; it was
  briefly renamed the Clopper Institute before becoming Houston
  Normal School in 1886 and Houston High School in 1895; between 1926
  and 1955, it was known as Central High School, and then for the next
  53 years, it was named Sam Houston High School; its present-day name
  was adopted in 2008 to reflect a new academic emphasis; and
         WHEREAS, Through the years, the school was also housed in a
  number of different buildings, including churches and Masonic
  temples; it moved from Capitol Street downtown to its current
  location at 9400 Irvington Boulevard in 1955; and
         WHEREAS, Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center has
  the oldest high school newspaper in the Lone Star State, The Aegis,
  which was established in 1889; in addition, the world's first girls'
  military drill squad was formed at the school by then principal
  F. M. Black; the squad was initially called the Black Battalion in
  his honor and is today known as the Tigerettes; and
         WHEREAS, Among other distinctions, Sam Houston can boast that
  one of its former faculty members, Lyndon Baines Johnson, went on to
  become president of the United States; he taught English and speech
  at the school in the 1920s; and
         WHEREAS, Recognition by the Texas Historical Commission
  highlights the significant role that Sam Houston Math, Science, and
  Technology Center has played in educating and nurturing countless
  children, and the official designation provides assurance that the
  history of this notable institution will be remembered for years to
  come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of a Texas Historical
  Marker at Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center and
  extend to all those participating in the dedication ceremony best
  wishes for an enjoyable and memorable event; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
