R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the |
|
founding of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio; and |
|
WHEREAS, Organized by the Reverend William Lampkin on the |
|
banks of Menger Creek, the congregation was known as Israelite |
|
Baptist Church before it adopted its present name in the 1920s; |
|
since its inception, New Hope has also benefited from the dedicated |
|
efforts of a number of other ministers, including the Reverends |
|
Lindsay Johnson, Claude White, Thomas Harry Robinson, Houston |
|
Duncan, S. L. Jackson, and Joshua Joubert, who leads the |
|
congregation today; and |
|
WHEREAS, Worship was initially held under a palm arbor, but |
|
the continued growth of the membership necessitated several moves |
|
to larger venues, culminating with the 1957 dedication of the |
|
current church edifice at 1909 Martin Luther King Drive; over the |
|
past half-century, remodeling has provided sufficient space for a |
|
variety of commendable programs that focus on education, missions, |
|
music, youth, and seniors, while additional ministries provide |
|
opportunities for worship and fellowship for individuals in nursing |
|
homes and in prisons; and |
|
WHEREAS, Countless area residents have looked to New Hope |
|
Missionary Baptist Church for inspiration and guidance through the |
|
years, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church at this |
|
special time in its rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of New Hope |
|
Missionary Baptist Church and extend to its members sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
