R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Mentoria Lewis Sherfield retired from the San |
|
|
Antonio Independent School District in May 2010, drawing to a close |
|
|
a notable career in education that spanned more than three decades; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Sherfield began teaching in Athens, Georgia, and |
|
|
she went on to serve in a number of school districts in that state; |
|
|
she also taught at the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in |
|
|
Germany; in 1989, she joined San Antonio ISD, where she worked at |
|
|
the San Antonio Alamo Achievement Center and at Wheatley Middle |
|
|
School; for the last nine years of her career she was a valued |
|
|
member of the faculty at Stonewall Jackson Davis Middle School, |
|
|
where she taught fifth grade; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In addition to her work in the classroom, Ms. |
|
|
Sherfield was a mentor and tutor in the after school Net Program, |
|
|
and she served as a PTA president for Davis Middle School; she |
|
|
further devoted her time to such organizations as the local chapter |
|
|
of the NAACP, the B.E.A.T. AIDS Coalition Trust, and the National |
|
|
Coalition for 100 Black Women, and she has served as the secretary |
|
|
of the board of directors at Emmanuel AME Church; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed educator received many accolades |
|
|
during her career, including being named Classroom Teacher of the |
|
|
Year and Delta Woman of the Year; she also received the NAACP |
|
|
Excellence in Education Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award |
|
|
from the Top Ladies of Distinction; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Known for her caring nature and her unwavering |
|
|
commitment to her profession, Mentoria Sherfield touched the lives |
|
|
of countless youth, and she may indeed reflect with pride on a |
|
|
career well spent; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Mentoria Lewis Sherfield on her |
|
|
retirement from the San Antonio Independent School District and |
|
|
extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Ms. Sherfield as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
