R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The city of Burleson has been named one of the 100
  Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance,
  which announced the winners of its most recent competition in
  September 2010; and
         WHEREAS, Founded in 1997 by General Colin Powell, America's
  Promise Alliance is a coalition of more than 400 corporations,
  nonprofits, faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, and
  individuals that have banded together to improve the lives of
  America's youth and to dramatically raise the percentage of
  teenagers in this country who graduate from high school; to
  accomplish those goals, the alliance works to ensure that children
  receive the basic support they need in order to thrive; this
  support, which the alliance calls the Five Promises, encompasses
  caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, an effective
  education, and opportunities to help others; and
         WHEREAS, The alliance launched its contest in 2005 to
  celebrate the communities that are the most successful in providing
  their children with the Five Promises; presented by the ING
  Foundation, the competition is open to any community that makes the
  welfare of its young people a priority; and
         WHEREAS, A first-time winner, Burleson was recognized for the
  many outstanding initiatives it has undertaken with regard to its
  youth; determined to keep the Five Promises and guided by a
  framework for action developed by the National League of Cities,
  Burleson has instituted the Mayor's Youth Council, which gives
  young people a voice in local government; it has also created the
  Burleson Opportunity Fund, a collaboration between the city, the
  Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, the Burleson Independent School
  District, nearby colleges, and local businesses that distributes
  scholarships to high school graduates, and it has established a
  number of programs to help students succeed in school and gain a
  greater awareness of educational and career possibilities; in
  addition, Burleson has attracted new health facilities that make
  health care for children more accessible; and
         WHEREAS, Burleson was honored, along with the other winners
  of the alliance competition, at a ceremony held on September 21,
  2010, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.; and
         WHEREAS, The city of Burleson has demonstrated its ongoing
  commitment to guaranteeing its children the resources they need to
  reach their full potential, making it a worthy recipient of this
  prestigious award; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the citizens of Burleson on their
  city's recognition as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young
  People and commend them for their dedicated efforts in behalf of
  local youth; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the city of Burleson as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
