R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Admired Arlington educator and coach Mayfield
  Workman passed away on June 29, 2009, at the age of 92, leaving his
  loved ones to reflect on a life that was rich in meaningful
  accomplishments; and
         WHEREAS, Known as "Bull" to his friends and family, Mr.
  Workman was born in Decatur on April 1, 1917, the son of Charlie and
  Alice Workman; he graduated from Decatur High School and went on to
  attend Decatur Baptist College before earning a degree at North
  Texas State Teachers College; moreover, he answered his nation's
  call to duty by serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps; and
         WHEREAS, He was joined in matrimony with the former Sterling
  Goodwin, beginning a rewarding relationship that spanned 67 years;
  the couple raised three children and later had the pleasure of
  welcoming six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren into the
  family; and
         WHEREAS, Opting to pursue a career in education, Mr. Workman
  became the football coach at Arlington High School; his years of
  guiding the Colts on the gridiron were highlighted by the 1951
  season, when his leadership and inspiration helped the team to win
  the University Interscholastic League 2A state championship; and
         WHEREAS, He later served as the athletic director for the
  Arlington Independent School District; Mr. Workman's skills as an
  administrator greatly benefited the district's students and earned
  him a place in the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association
  Hall of Honor; and
         WHEREAS, Many additional accolades were awarded to this
  exceptional mentor through the years; he was inducted into the
  Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1969 and was
  named to the organization's board of directors, and he received the
  Distinguished Colt Alumni Award from the Arlington High School
  Alumni Association in 2006; in addition, the Fort Worth
  Star-Telegram created the Mayfield Workman Award, which is annually
  presented to the top football player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,
  and in 1983 Arlington ISD paid tribute to him by dedicating Mayfield
  Workman Junior High School; and
         WHEREAS, A prominent figure in the Arlington community, Mr.
  Workman was a Mason for more than 50 years and a charter member and
  former president of the Greater Arlington Lions Club, and his civic
  contributions included work in behalf of the United Way and the
  YMCA; he was also an active member of the congregation at First
  United Methodist Church in Arlington, serving on the board of
  directors and as president of the men's Bible class; and
         WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mayfield Workman dedicated
  himself to making a positive difference in the world around him, and
  his achievements as an educator and community leader will continue
  to inspire all those who had the good fortune to know him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mayfield Workman and
  extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his
  wife, Sterling Goodwin Workman; to his children, Rusty Workman and
  his wife, Margaret, Pam Copeland, and Pat Shelton and her husband,
  Kim; to his grandchildren, Chris Workman and his wife, Michelle,
  Allison Workman, Jennifer Andrews and her husband, Jason, Amy Hayes
  and her husband, Lane, Sarah Shelton, and Katelin Shelton; to his
  great-grandchildren, Jake and Dane Workman and Mayfield, Taylor,
  and Copeland Hayes; to his cousin, Bill Griggs, and his wife,
  Lavada; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mayfield
  Workman.
