R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Residents of Arlington lost an admired educator with |
|
the passing of Nita Scheble Cox on July 18, 2009, at the age of 84; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The daughter of Eugene and Fay Howell Scheble, the |
|
former Nita Scheble was born on May 25, 1925, in Cleburne, but she |
|
relocated with her family to Fort Worth in the early 1930s; the |
|
valedictorian of the Class of 1942 at Polytechnic High School, she |
|
received a scholarship to attend North Texas Agricultural College |
|
in Arlington, where she again became valedictorian and attained an |
|
associate's degree in science; in 1946, she graduated from The |
|
University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, |
|
and she went on to study at the University of Wisconsin at Madison |
|
and to earn a master's degree from Texas Christian University in |
|
1961; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cox began her teaching career in 1947 as a |
|
member of the English department faculty at The University of Texas |
|
at Arlington; over the course of nearly five decades with the |
|
university, she transitioned to the speech communication, drama, |
|
and communication departments, developing speech and drama |
|
classes, teaching English, and directing plays, and she became an |
|
associate professor; in addition, she served as assistant chair of |
|
the communication department from 1976 to 1991, and she led the |
|
speech program from 1989 to 1993; among her many accolades were an |
|
Outstanding Academic Advisor award in 1987 and designation as a |
|
professor emeritus in 1994; she was also named a Distinguished |
|
Alumnus of UT Arlington in 1996, and she retired from the university |
|
in 2003; and |
|
WHEREAS, Active in her community, Mrs. Cox contributed her |
|
time to numerous organizations, including the Arlington Woman's |
|
Club, Altrusa International, the Arlington Republican Club, Lamar |
|
Baptist Church, the Fielder Museum, Friends of the UTA Libraries, |
|
and the Texas Speech Communication Association, and she served as a |
|
speech consultant to various businesses and managed a murder |
|
mystery troupe; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all of her endeavors, she enjoyed the love and |
|
support of her husband, Dr. B. Wayne Cox, with whom she shared more |
|
than 20 years, until his passing in 1985; and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Nita Cox demonstrated the |
|
utmost dedication to her family, her profession, and her community, |
|
and she leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will forever be |
|
treasured by all those who were privileged to share in her love and |
|
friendship; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nita Scheble Cox and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her |
|
daughter, Leslie Cox Recine, and her husband, Dean; to her |
|
grandchildren, Chelsea and Chloe Recine; to her sister, Norma |
|
Scheble Nash Anderton; and to her other relatives and friends; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nita |
|
Scheble Cox. |
