R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Students, parents, educators, and community members |
|
throughout the State of Texas are celebrating National Teacher Day |
|
on May 3, 2011; and |
|
WHEREAS, This worthy tradition dates to the 1940s, when |
|
Arkansas educator Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with |
|
political and educational leaders to suggest an official day to |
|
honor teachers across the country; she attracted the attention of |
|
Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the United States Congress |
|
to proclaim a National Teacher Day; the event is now observed on the |
|
Tuesday of the first full week of May; and |
|
WHEREAS, Texas public schools employ more than 320,000 |
|
teachers, who play an essential role in the lives of the state's 4.7 |
|
million students; as role models, motivators, mentors, and |
|
listeners, teachers lay the foundation for the good citizens of the |
|
future; and |
|
WHEREAS, The quality education that teachers provide is vital |
|
for young people to achieve their full potential, and the |
|
exceptional contributions made by all who teach are indeed |
|
deserving of an expression of appreciation from the residents of |
|
the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize May 3, 2011, as National Teacher Day |
|
in Texas and extend to teachers throughout the state sincere best |
|
wishes for success in their important work. |
