R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Students, parents, educators, and community members
  throughout the State of Texas are celebrating National Teacher Day
  on May 3, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, This worthy tradition dates to the 1940s, when
  Arkansas educator Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with
  political and educational leaders to suggest an official day to
  honor teachers across the country; she attracted the attention of
  Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded the United States Congress
  to proclaim a National Teacher Day; the event is now observed on the
  Tuesday of the first full week of May; and
         WHEREAS, Texas public schools employ more than 320,000
  teachers, who play an essential role in the lives of the state's 4.7
  million students; as role models, motivators, mentors, and
  listeners, teachers lay the foundation for the good citizens of the
  future; and
         WHEREAS, The quality education that teachers provide is vital
  for young people to achieve their full potential, and the
  exceptional contributions made by all who teach are indeed
  deserving of an expression of appreciation from the residents of
  the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize May 3, 2011, as National Teacher Day
  in Texas and extend to teachers throughout the state sincere best
  wishes for success in their important work.
