adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence, has been |
commemorated as Texas Flag Day; and |
WHEREAS, While it is not known for certain who designed the |
present Lone Star flag, a bill containing the design was introduced |
in the Congress of the Republic of Texas by Senator William H. |
Wharton on December 28, 1838; the bill then went to a committee |
composed of Oliver Jones and two other unidentified senators, who |
reported out a substitute bill containing the same design; Congress |
adopted the substitute bill on January 21, 1839, and President |
Mirabeau B. Lamar signed the measure four days later; and |

WHEREAS, The Lone Star flag replaced both the previous |
national flag and the Texas naval ensign, each of which had served |
as an official standard since December 10, 1836; like those two |
flags, and like many others that had seen service in Texas since the |
days of revolution, the new national flag incorporated a single |
star, which the Convention of 1836 had adopted as the official |
emblem of the republic; the blue, red, and white stripes of the flag |
were said to represent loyalty, bravery, and purity, respectively; |
and |

the 34th Texas Legislature designated March 2 of each year as Texas |
Flag Day; and |
WHEREAS, Over the years, Texas lore and legend have |
captivated the imagination of people far beyond the borders of the |
Lone Star State, and the Texas flag is now recognized around the |
globe; and |
WHEREAS, For Texans themselves, the flag powerfully evokes a |
sense of identity and pride, a feeling of belonging to a land both |
rugged and beloved, and an appreciation of a rich and unique |
heritage; simple and bold in its design, the flag speaks of liberty, |
courage, and the untrammeled, free spirit, and wherever Texans may |
be in the world, from the Trans-Pecos to the Piney Woods to the war |
zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, it symbolizes home; now, therefore, |
be it |
