R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Dana Gibson is being installed as the 13th |
|
president of Sam Houston State University at an investiture |
|
ceremony on March 8, 2011; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson became the first female president of the |
|
institution when she assumed office on September 1, 2010, after a |
|
unanimous vote of the Texas State University System Board of |
|
Regents; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State, Dana Gibson earned |
|
her bachelor's degree and M.B.A. from Texas Woman's University and |
|
her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Arlington; she became a |
|
certified public accountant in 1984 and began her distinguished |
|
career in higher education two years later as a lecturer in |
|
accounting and management information systems at Texas Woman's |
|
University; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson went on to serve TWU as an associate |
|
professor, as associate vice president of finance and |
|
administration, and as university controller before being named |
|
vice president of academic and information services; she later |
|
joined the staff of the University of Colorado Denver, where she |
|
oversaw a budget of more than $700 million as vice chancellor for |
|
administration and finance; and |
|
WHEREAS, Continuing her work in administration, Dr. Gibson |
|
served as vice president for business and finance at Southern |
|
Methodist University, and in 2007, she was appointed president of |
|
National University in San Diego; while guiding the California |
|
school, she facilitated program accreditation efforts and promoted |
|
the analysis of online education efforts related to academic |
|
quality and service to students; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 2009, Dr. Gibson brought her wealth of experience |
|
to Sam Houston State University; in her initial role as vice |
|
president of finance and operations, she administered many of the |
|
institution's business functions, including the controller's |
|
office, budget, auxiliary operations, procurement, property, |
|
public safety, parking, human resources, facilities management, |
|
construction and planning, information resources, and |
|
institutional research and assessment; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of her career, Dr. Gibson has earned |
|
a number of honors for her exceptional work; in addition to being |
|
named a TWU Distinguished Alumna and SMU Administrator of the Year, |
|
she has received the International Award for the Innovative Use of |
|
Imaging Technology in Higher Education and the Notable Contribution |
|
to Information Systems Literature Award from the American |
|
Accounting Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dana Gibson is uniquely qualified to build on the |
|
rich tradition of excellence at Sam Houston State University, and |
|
her dedication and proven leadership ability are sure to benefit |
|
students, staff, and faculty members alike; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Dana Gibson on her installation |
|
as president of Sam Houston State University and extend to her |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Gibson as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
