R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The citizens of Hutto lost one of their most admired
  community leaders with the death of the Honorable Edmund G. Schmidt
  on February 21, 2011, at the age of 89; and
         WHEREAS, A native of East Williamson County, Edmund Schmidt
  was born on January 5, 1922, the first of nine children of Rosa and
  F. H. Schmidt; he grew up tending to his family's farm and learning
  the grocery trade at his weekend job in Taylor; in 1942, he joined
  the U.S. Army, serving in a medical evacuation detachment on ships
  in the Pacific theater and in a field hospital in New Guinea; his
  outstanding efforts in behalf of his country earned him a number of
  honors, including two Bronze Star Medals; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Schmidt married the former Julia Hurta in 1942;
  the couple settled in Hutto in 1951 and opened Red & White Grocery,
  operating the thriving business for nearly four decades until 1990,
  when Mr. Schmidt opened a local chapter of Germania Insurance; and
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to giving back to his fellow residents,
  Mr. Schmidt began his distinguished tenure in public office as a
  member of the city council, and he went on to serve as mayor for two
  decades; in later years, he continued his public service through
  his work with the zoning board of adjustment and the Hutto Education
  Foundation; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan was a charter member of the
  local chamber of commerce and the Lions Club, where he had 55 years
  of perfect attendance and was recognized with the Melvin Jones
  Fellowship Award; and
         WHEREAS, The life of Edmund Schmidt stands as an outstanding
  example of positive civic engagement, and he leaves behind a record
  of service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Edmund
  G. Schmidt and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family:
  to his wife of 69 years, Julia Schmidt; to his sons, Dennis Schmidt
  and his wife, Rosemary, and David Schmidt and his wife, Jessica; to
  his daughters, Jennifer Goodenow and her husband, Kenneth, and
  Corliss Powell and her husband, Ted; to his 12 grandchildren and his
  7 great-grandchildren; to his sisters, Rose Hardin, Nathalie
  Engling and her husband, Karl, and Shirley Halstead; and to his
  other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of the
  Honorable Edmund G. Schmidt.
