R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, In recognition of the exceptional community service |
|
of a truly outstanding Texan, El Paso Inc. has named Jim Phillips
|
|
the 2010 El Pasoan of the Year; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Dallas, Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Air |
|
Force and was an instructor at the basic airman indoctrination |
|
center at Lackland Air Force Base; returning to civilian life, he |
|
earned his bachelor's degree in communication from Texas Christian |
|
University and began a notable career in radio; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips worked as an executive at stations in |
|
Fort Worth and McAllen and later was an investor and director for |
|
stations in Shreveport, Amarillo, Reno, Columbia, Brownsville, and |
|
Corpus Christi; in 1969, he purchased KHEY in El Paso; his tenure in |
|
communications earned him a number of honors through the years, |
|
including induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and the title |
|
of Broadcaster of the Year from the Texas Association of |
|
Broadcasters, which also named him Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Invited to join the board of M Bank, he went on to |
|
hold that position during several iterations of what is now Wells |
|
Fargo, and today, he continues as chair of the Wells Fargo Community |
|
Advisory Board; and |
|
WHEREAS, A man committed to making the world a better place, |
|
Mr. Phillips is looked to as a mentor by countless people, and a |
|
host of worthwhile organizations have benefited from his |
|
leadership; he has been president of the chamber of commerce, the |
|
local chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, |
|
and the United Way of El Paso; the El Paso Boys Club, Rotary Club of |
|
El Paso East, and El Paso Arts Alliance also thrived under his able |
|
guidance; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Phillips has further distinguished himself |
|
through his service on the board of directors of the Texas Council |
|
on Economic Education, Texas Association of Taxpayers, Texas |
|
Election Bureau, and El Paso Community Foundation; currently, he is |
|
a member of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce Foundation |
|
Board, University of Texas at El Paso Development Board, Hospice of |
|
El Paso Foundation Board, El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center |
|
Advisory Board, and Project ARRIBA Board of Directors, to name but a |
|
few; and |
|
WHEREAS, Recognized for his outstanding efforts in behalf of |
|
his fellow citizens, Mr. Phillips has received the City of El Paso |
|
Conquistador Award, the Greater El Paso Association of REALTORS |
|
Outstanding Citizen Award, the United Way Champion of Caring Award, |
|
and the Rotary Club of El Paso Distinguished Service Award; and |
|
WHEREAS, The vitality of a community depends in large measure |
|
on the vision and dedication of its leaders, and through his myriad |
|
endeavors, Jim Phillips has greatly benefited residents of El Paso, |
|
and he sets an inspiring example of civic engagement; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Jim Phillips on being named the |
|
2010 El Pasoan of the Year by El Paso Inc. and extend to him sincere
|
|
best wishes for continued success in all of his endeavors; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Phillips as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
