R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Marian Thomas, the executive director and CEO of
  Communities in Schools of Galveston County, is making a meaningful
  difference in the lives of many area children and citizens; and
         WHEREAS, Beginning as a volunteer with the organization 18
  years ago, Marian Thomas has led the Communities in Schools of
  Galveston County program for the past 13 years, and during that time
  she has motivated and inspired hundreds of students, parents,
  volunteers, and CIS staff members; known for her ability to unite
  all segments of the county population in order to achieve common
  goals, she has played an instrumental role in improving the
  academic performance, attendance, behavior, and social skills of
  area students; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Thomas supervises the efforts of CIS to provide
  at-risk students with supportive guidance, counseling, tutoring,
  college preparation, preemployment training, mentoring, and other
  needed services; in addition, she organizes workshops in which
  students have the opportunity to discuss important issues with
  community leaders or to meet with attorneys, judges, police
  officers, and other public servants to learn about the justice
  system; and
         WHEREAS, Ably assisted in her endeavors by the many
  individuals with whom she has formed partnerships, Ms. Thomas has
  assembled an energetic and committed CIS board that includes
  business leaders, city council members, local school district and
  church directors, and university representatives, among others;
  moreover, she is responsible for a yearly CIS fund-raiser that
  enjoys strong support in the community; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Thomas also shares her time and talents with
  Child Protective Services, the Galveston College Foundation Board
  of Directors, and Rotary International; she is a graduate of
  Leadership Galveston and an active member of Reedy Chapel African
  Methodist Episcopal Church, where she serves as steward and
  secretary; and
         WHEREAS, A passionate proponent of education in the classroom
  and beyond, Marian Thomas has helped to set countless young Texans
  on the path to future achievement, and in so doing, she has served
  as an inspiring example to students and colleagues alike; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Marian Thomas for her service as the
  executive director and CEO of Communities in Schools of Galveston
  County and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Thomas as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
