R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Humberto G. Garcia of Del Rio is focusing new |
attention on an inspiring chapter in the city's history with the |
publication of his book Mustang Miracle, which tells the story of |
the state champion San Felipe High School golf team of 1957; and |
WHEREAS, In the mid-1950s, a group of students were recruited |
to form a golf team at San Felipe High, which was then a segregated |
school; their knowledge of the game had been gained by working as |
caddies and playing on a hardscrabble course they had made |
themselves; despite having outdated and inferior equipment and no |
professional instruction, the San Felipe Mustangs became winners; |
the team finished as runner-up in the state championship tournament |
in 1956; the next year, they returned to the finals, the only |
minority players in the event, and captured the Texas state title; |
this triumph over all expectations inspired Mr. Garcia to write |
Mustang Miracle; and |
WHEREAS, The book is his first published work after a notable |
career as a lawyer; born in Del Rio in 1955, he spent his formative |
years working in potato and onion fields with his family; he |
graduated from San Felipe High School as class salutatorian in 1972 |
and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he received |
his bachelor's degree in government at the age of 19; Mr. Garcia |
then earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of |
Law and in 1980 was appointed as Del Rio's first full-time city |
attorney; five years later, he moved to San Antonio and established |
a successful private practice; and |
WHEREAS, In January 2011, he retired from full-time work to |
concentrate on consulting and writing and also to nurture his |
golfing career; as a professional, Mr. Garcia has played in several |
qualifiers for the Champions Tour and is a regular on the Southern |
Texas Professional Golfers Association Senior Series; in all his |
endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife, Cynthia, and |
his four children; and |
WHEREAS, As a San Felipe High School alumnus and an avid |
golfer, Mr. Garcia is uniquely qualified to tell the tale of the |
state champion Mustangs team, and the resulting saga of |
perseverance in the face of adversity is one that is sure to |
resonate beyond Del Rio and the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be |
it |
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
Legislature hereby congratulate Humberto G. Garcia on the |
publication of Mustang Miracle and extend to him sincere best |
wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
prepared for Mr. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
