R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Jimmy Miller, an investigator with the Brazoria
  County Sheriff's Office, was deservedly named the 2009 Peace
  Officer of the Year by the 100 Club of Brazoria County; and
         WHEREAS, The organization presents awards annually to select
  peace officers who have gone above and beyond in the performance of
  their duties; Deputy Miller was one of 15 officers recognized in
  2009 for his outstanding commitment to safeguarding the public; and
         WHEREAS, In July 2009, Deputy Miller demonstrated great
  bravery in response to a dangerous situation with an armed and
  suicidal suspect; along with other officers, Deputy Miller tried to
  negotiate with the suspect to secure the scene, but the task proved
  difficult; then, just as the suspect raised his weapon, Deputy
  Miller took the initiative to protect a colleague, placing himself
  in front of his fellow officer and thus preventing him from being
  struck in the chest; Deputy Miller was subsequently shot in his
  shoulder, but no serious injuries or fatalities were sustained by
  his fellow peace officers as a result of his courageous actions that
  day; and
         WHEREAS, Investigator Miller began his career in 1985 with
  the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he attained the
  rank of lieutenant, and since 1996, he has served in the Brazoria
  County Sheriff's Office as a jailer, a patrol deputy, and a criminal
  investigator; and
         WHEREAS, Jimmy Miller exemplifies the highest ideals of the
  law enforcement profession, and his dedication and selflessness
  have earned him the lasting admiration and gratitude of countless
  individuals; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jimmy Miller on his receipt of the
  2009 Peace Officer of the Year award from the 100 Club of Brazoria
  County and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Deputy Miller as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
