R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The 2011 Dallas International Film Festival is |
|
celebrating its opening day on March 31; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 2006 by Liener Temerlin and the Dallas |
|
Film Society, the festival has since screened 812 films from 49 |
|
countries, including 46 world premieres and 12 U.S. premieres, and |
|
presented more than $270,000 in awards; in 2010, the festival drew |
|
20,000 people and donated over $11,000 in grants to Texas high |
|
school film programs; and |
|
WHEREAS, Entries have included Academy Award winner The Hurt |
|
Locker and Academy Award nominee Winter's Bone, the documentaries |
|
Bill Cunningham New York and The King of Kong, and foreign fare such |
|
as the Belgian animated film A Town Called Panic and the British |
|
comedy Hot Fuzz; and |
|
WHEREAS, This year's lineup includes the U.S. premiere of |
|
Shawn Ku's Beautiful Boy, starring Michael Sheen and Maria Bello, |
|
and the world premiere of Patrick Tourville's OK Buckaroos, a |
|
documentary about musician Jerry Jeff Walker; also featured are |
|
Soul Surfer, starring Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt, and the Mexican |
|
comedy Adios Mundo Cruel (Goodbye Cruel World); the 2011 festival, |
|
which is being dedicated to Mr. Temerlin, concludes with a gala |
|
ceremony on April 8, when the Dallas Star Awards and the Festival |
|
Filmmaker Awards will be presented; and |
|
WHEREAS, Cited by MovieMaker magazine as one of the "25 |
|
Festivals Worth the Entry Fee," the Dallas International Film |
|
Festival honors the achievement of film artists from around the |
|
world and promotes Dallas as a vibrant arts destination and |
|
important center for film; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 2011 Dallas International Film |
|
Festival and extend to its organizers and attendees sincere best |
|
wishes for a successful and entertaining event; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Dallas International Film Festival as an |
|
expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
