R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, a traumatic brain injury occurs every twenty-three |
|
seconds in the United States; and |
|
WHEREAS, traumatic brain injuries can have debilitating |
|
effects on brain functionality, including thinking, reasoning, |
|
memory, and communication; and |
|
WHEREAS, those who suffer traumatic brain injuries may face |
|
years of rehabilitation, therapy, and recovery; and |
|
WHEREAS, the families, friends, co-workers, and communities |
|
of those who suffer traumatic brain injuries suffer along-side the |
|
victims of the actual injuries; |
|
WHEREAS, life may never be the same for an individual who has |
|
suffered a traumatic brain injury; and |
|
WHEREAS, a concussion is a type of brain injury that can |
|
interrupt the regular function of the brain; and |
|
WHEREAS, approximately 3.8 million sports-related and |
|
recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each |
|
year; and |
|
WHEREAS, approximately 135,000 sports-related and |
|
recreation-related traumatic brain injuries occur among children |
|
ages 5 to 18 each year; and |
|
WHEREAS, increasing prevention and early diagnosis require |
|
raising awareness about the causes, symptoms and effects of |
|
traumatic brain injury; and |
|
WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated as Brain |
|
Injury Awareness Month in order to further the Brain Injury |
|
Association's ongoing commitment to advocacy and education |
|
regarding concussions and other traumatic brain injuries; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the month of March as Brain Injury |
|
Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness of traumatic brain |
|
injury among all Texans, but particularly among those most at-risk |
|
for suffering this serious and potentially life-altering injury. |
