R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, a traumatic brain injury occurs every twenty-three
  seconds in the United States; and
         WHEREAS, traumatic brain injuries can have debilitating
  effects on brain functionality, including thinking, reasoning,
  memory, and communication; and
         WHEREAS, those who suffer traumatic brain injuries may face
  years of rehabilitation, therapy, and recovery; and
         WHEREAS, the families, friends, co-workers, and communities
  of those who suffer traumatic brain injuries suffer along-side the
  victims of the actual injuries;
         WHEREAS, life may never be the same for an individual who has
  suffered a traumatic brain injury; and
         WHEREAS, a concussion is a type of brain injury that can
  interrupt the regular function of the brain; and
         WHEREAS, approximately 3.8 million sports-related and
  recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each
  year; and
         WHEREAS, approximately 135,000 sports-related and
  recreation-related traumatic brain injuries occur among children
  ages 5 to 18 each year; and
         WHEREAS, increasing prevention and early diagnosis require
  raising awareness about the causes, symptoms and effects of
  traumatic brain injury; and
         WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated as Brain
  Injury Awareness Month in order to further the Brain Injury
  Association's ongoing commitment to advocacy and education
  regarding concussions and other traumatic brain injuries; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the month of March as Brain Injury
  Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness of traumatic brain
  injury among all Texans, but particularly among those most at-risk
  for suffering this serious and potentially life-altering injury.
