R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The main terminal building at Scholes International
  Airport at Galveston, severely damaged in 2008 by Hurricane Ike, is
  reopening on April 7, 2011; and
         WHEREAS, Originally erected in 1950, the Scholes
  International Airport main terminal was a state-of-the-art
  structure; however, in September 2008, Hurricane Ike brought with
  it a storm surge that filled the first floor of the building with
  nine feet of water, destroying windows, doors, and furniture and
  ruining the facility's heating, ventilation, air-conditioning,
  communications, and electrical systems; and
         WHEREAS, A temporary terminal was utilized while officials
  made plans to rebuild; the airport, in cooperation with the
  aviation division of the Texas Department of Transportation and
  with the input of community leaders, ultimately chose an area
  contractor, Sullivan Land Services, to complete the restoration of
  the terminal to its 1950s glory; and
         WHEREAS, Emphasizing the local environment in its design, the
  restored terminal features updated and more energy-efficient
  heating and cooling systems as well as improved accessibility; it
  has been outfitted to survive another hurricane through the
  installation of impact-resistant windows and the housing of
  critical electrical systems on the second floor; new landscaping
  includes palm trees and other flora to greet visitors with a visual
  reminder of Galveston Island's tropical climate; and
         WHEREAS, Often the first glimpse of Galveston for many
  traveling to the Lone Star State, the main terminal at Scholes
  International Airport has a long history of welcoming individuals
  to Texas, and its restoration will enable that tradition to
  continue for years to come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the reopening of the main terminal
  building at Scholes International Airport at Galveston and commend
  all those who contributed to the restoration of this important
  community landmark; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Scholes International Airport as an expression of high
  regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
