R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |
|
a close when Dr. Jesse Wallace Jackson, Jr., passed away on March |
|
30, 2011, at the age of 73; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on September 25, 1937, Dr. Jackson was the |
|
second of five children of Jesse Wallace Jackson, Sr., and Kathryn |
|
Bryant Jackson; he graduated from Terrell High School and went on to |
|
earn his bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University, where he |
|
was a leader in the Omega Psi Phi fraternity; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson became a commissioned officer in the |
|
U.S. Air Force in 1962, and his distinguished 10-year military |
|
tenure included service in Vietnam and locations throughout the |
|
United States; he was later appointed as an ROTC instructor at |
|
Tennessee State University, and during his term with the school, he |
|
helped to sponsor the undergraduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson also continued his studies while in |
|
Tennessee, earning his master's and doctoral degrees from |
|
Vanderbilt University, and following his departure from the air |
|
force, he became a sociology instructor with the institution; he |
|
later joined the faculty at the University of Houston, serving in |
|
the department of sociology and in the department of African |
|
American studies, a subject on which he authored a book; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply committed to education, Dr. Jackson worked |
|
with the Job Partnership Council, founding a school that assisted |
|
troubled youth and high school dropouts in earning GEDs; moreover, |
|
he helped to operate charter schools in Houston and Fort Worth, and |
|
his efforts benefited countless people; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson was also devoted to his family, |
|
including his wife of 47 years, Theresa, his daughter, state |
|
district judge Maria Jackson, and his son, Jesse Wallace Jackson |
|
III; and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout his time on this earth, Jesse Jackson |
|
gave unstintingly of his energies and talents in whatever mission |
|
he undertook, and he is deeply missed by all those who held him |
|
dear; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Jesse Wallace |
|
Jackson, Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his |
|
family: to his wife, Theresa Jackson; to his daughter, the |
|
Honorable Maria Terez Jackson; to his son, Jesse Wallace Jackson |
|
III, and his wife, Jenette; to his grandchildren, Braxton, Blair, |
|
and Joshua; to his sisters, Ella Maye Colley, Phyllis E. Sillemon, |
|
and Vicky Lynn Weldon; to his brothers, Mance RaMon Jackson and the |
|
Reverend Michael W. Jackson; and to his other relatives and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jesse |
|
Wallace Jackson, Jr. |
